Transforming eCommerce for Foodstuffs North Island
Introduction
In 2024, Transcend entered a partnership with Foodstuffs North Island to help transform its online business by launching an innovative grocery picking service. This collaboration aims to expedite the co-operative’s eCommerce journey by implementing a more efficient and precise picking solution, optimising the utilisation of store warehouse space. This initiative is designed to allow Foodstuffs North Island to enhance customer service and accelerate the growth of Foodstuffs North Island’s online business.
Our Approach
Fulfilment Strategy Transcend collaborated closely with Foodstuffs North Island to develop a robust fulfilment strategy. This involved a comprehensive analysis of their Customer Value Proposition, competitive landscape, labour supply, costs, transportation networks, and sales growth forecasts. By pinpointing specific growth areas, Transcend was able to design a network that meets both current and future capacity requirements.
Transcend Picking Rollout Recognising that even the most advanced picking software requires an optimal environment to thrive, Transcend partnered with store owners to ensure the success of New World and PAK’nSAVE stores. The Transcend team undertook the following initiatives:
- Store Configuration: Optimised store setup through detailed mapping, labelling, and backroom staging area enhancements.
- Equipment: Provided access to industry-leading trays, trolleys, and devices, refined through four decades of continuous improvement, as used by Tesco.
- Training: Delivered on-site training in both the UK and New Zealand, enabling Foodstuffs North Island staff to achieve operational readiness swiftly.
- Picking Rollout: Offered on-site support during each store rollout to ensure seamless implementation at each store.

“We’re excited to be the first global partner with Transcend who, as a retailer, understands our business and what matters to our store owners and customers. Through the introduction of their pick technology, we have seen a significant increase in hourly pick rates and the pilot stores have gone live on time, and to plan and importantly, with positive feedback from our store owners and wider teams. We look forward to our long-term partnership with Transcend.”
